Thank you for visiting the Gender Diverse Aggie’s (GDA) website! We are excited to provide resources, support and advocacy for the transgender and gender expansive community of NMSU and Las Cruces.
What is the Gender Diverse Aggies group?
We are an NMSU student group promoting gender diversity and the expression of all genders. Our group provides a space for all people to feel safe and supported. Folks are free to discuss and explore who they are, and learn from each other, regardless of their gender identity or expression. Our group is for everyone!
Folks who may have questions or are interested in advocating for our community are invited to attend our weekly meetings or email us anytime.
Meetings for the fall 2017 semester are Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. at the LGBT+ Programs office, Rm 146 in the Garcia Annex building.
Why does the Gender Diverse Aggies group exist?
A lack of organizations and resources for transgender and gender nonconforming people of NMSU, and within the larger Las Cruces community, prompted the creation of the Gender Diverse Aggies (GDA) in the Spring of 2015. In forming an official student organization, we are better able to serve as advocates for the trans* and gender non-conforming students on campus and in the community.
What does a Gender Diverse Aggies meeting look like?
Our meetings are very friendly, educational and fun! We discuss matters of identity, and plans for advocacy or upcoming events. We also engage in team building, game playing, and advocacy training adventures. A combination of discussions, activities and adventures help us grow as a group and explore new ways to express ourselves.
Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the NMSU LGBT+ Programs office (Garcia Annex, Room 146).
We also hold informal gatherings throughout the semester (a great chance to get to know us), so add us on Facebook or TeamApp to keep in touch!
A Note from Our President
My name is Vibianno Imanuel Gonzalez and I am a student at NMSU studying Journalism and Mass Communications. I began my work with GDA last year as a member of the club and am super excited for the new school year!
In addition to my work with GDA, I am a facilitator for support groups and on the Board of Directors for the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. I also sit on a leadership committee for the LGBT+ organizations in Las Cruces and on the Southern New Mexico Pride board. On campus, I am also the Co-President of the AgGays (the LGBT+ social student group) with Alexa Johnston.
As Co-President of GDA I am excited to continue to bring new resources and support to the NMSU campus, and especially, my trans and gender expansive siblings. This year we are building on the policies that have recently passed to make NMSU a more inclusive and safe space for us. Among the protections we’re building on are: preferred name, gender neutral restrooms, and inclusive housing.
If you have any questions, suggestions, concerns or love notes please feel free to email me personally or the GDA email for information, resources or support.
Thank you and see you at the meeting 🙂
