New Mexico Resources:
Please read the above documents to plan the order in which you will change your name and/or gender designation on various documents. For NM specific driver’s license information see below.

It is very simple to change your gender marker on you NM driver’s license.
Go to the New Mexico MVD drivers form page and select “Gender Designation Change Request, MVD10237”.

To change just your gender designation on your driver’s license you must have a medical or social service provider (physician, therapist, counselor or psychiatric social worker) sign the form and state that “in my professional opinion the applicant’s gender identity is (circle one): Male Female and can reasonably be expected to continue as such for the foreseeable future.”
This is an extremely simple and cheap procedure in New Mexico as you do not need a court order to change your gender designation, just this one form. A renewed NM four-year license costs $18.

You can change your name on this form as well. However, to have your name legally changed you must present a court ordered name change. This makes things more expensive.

Obtaining a court order requires the following:
Complete “Petition for Name Change” document with notarized signatures (estimated cost $132)
Complete “Notice of Name Change” document and get hearing date
Publish your name change in the paper for two consecutive weeks (unknown cost)
Attend court hearing
See the linked PDF document here detailing the name change process in NM. This document does not constitute legal advice. Please see an attorney for more information.

Note that if the Social Security Administration (SSA) has not been updated on your gender designation change, NM MVD will need to override the difference. See the Transgender Law Center “ID Please!” document above on how to update the SSA document and other documents.

See the NM MVD Driver Procedures Manual for more information.
